Today's
Bangladesh was born in 1971 after a nine month liberation war
against the occupied military regime. Bangladesh is a country
considered rich in archaeological wealth, especially from the
medieval period during both Muslim and Hindu rule. Compared to
many other countries of the modern world, Bangladesh is a new
country but it is the home of an old civilisation. Its history
can be traced back to about 1000 BC.
More than 85 percent of the area of Bangladesh is low flat alluvial
plain crisscrossed by the mighty rivers Padma, Meghna, Jamuna
and their innumerable tributaries and distributaries. These are
an important part of the physical environment of Bangladesh. In
the south lies the Bay of Bengal and to the northeast lies the
broad mass of the Assam Range on the Shillong Plateau. The Himalayas
lie close to the boundary in the northwest. The northeastern and
southeastern parts of the country are dotted with small hills
and ridges. This region is covered by the tropical rain forest.
The southwestern part is covered by the dense tropical mangrove
forest, the Sundarbans. It is the home of Royal Bengal Tiger.
